Alcohol What is the Attraction?

Alcohol is a drug that elicits a pleasure response in the human brain, which in return causes addiction to that substance. Alcoholism is an extremely difficult addiction to recover from. One question that many people ask is “why do people begin drinking to begin with”? There are many things that are pleasurable but people do not become addicted to them. Alcohol has an attraction that, for many people, cannot be easily overcome. There are many reasons given as to why people begin drinking.

1. People believe that drinking alcohol helps them with their problems. They believe it helps them to escape and to forget about the troubles going on around them. Temporarily, alcohol may do this but in the end, it causes a multitude more problems than it can help someone forget about. In addition, when the alcohol is gone the problems remain.

2. Some people think drinking is cool. While the image of drinking may be cool to some people, drinking and getting drunk causes a person to do extremely uncool things.

3. Social pressures cause some people to begin to drink. Particularly young people or college age students can be pressured by their peers to begin drinking. Once they start drinking, the friends are no longer there to help them deal with the addiction aspect of the alcohol.

4. There is a group of people who believe that alcohol helps the body to stay warm when it is cold outside. In actuality, the effects of alcohol on the body make the body temperature drop and it is extremely difficult for the body to warm itself up again.

5. Many people believe that alcohol makes them more creative. Writers and artists who go through a slump or a dry spell will occasionally turn to alcohol because when they drink they feel more creative. In actuality, alcohol makes a person feel more creative but it takes away the brain’s ability to think new thoughts and come up with new ideas. Once the alcohol wears off the person will realized that it did nothing for them. Many times this will cause a depression that forces them to drink again. This causes the downward spiral toward alcoholism.

There are many alternatives to alcohol that can actually help a person to feel more creative, less stressed, more confident and even warm. Exercise is one activity that can help relieve stress and help a person deal with his or her problems. The endorphins that are released during exercise can also help to get the creative juices flowing in the brain as well. For the person who wants to look cool or develop their own image, a great way to do that is with their clothing and their style. The way they wear their hair, carry themselves, and act on the inside is what makes a person look cool and attractive. The alternative ways to increase self-esteem and confidence also give the person the courage to go against peer pressure and to make her or her own choices without the fear of ridicule. That person can also look for people who also do not drink and surround himself with like people in like situations.

The reasons people give to begin drinking are in actuality excuses and myths. There is no truth to most of the reasons and it takes a strong person to stand up and make the choice to never start drinking in the first place.
